In a world filled with constant change and external demands, having a clear sense of purpose can make all the difference.
A personal mission statement can serve as a guide, steering your decisions, actions, and overall life direction.
It helps you focus on what truly matters for you, fostering a sense of clarity, direction, and purpose… and making you less susceptible to external forces (like well-meaning friends, family, and culture.)
This exercise will walk you through the process of writing your own personal mission statement, enabling you to live a life more centered on your personal locus of control.
Why a Personal Mission Statement?
Direction and Purpose: It provides a sense of direction, helping you stay on track with your long-term goals. With a mission statement, you are less likely to be swayed by distractions or temporary setbacks.
Motivation and Commitment: Knowing your mission helps you stay motivated and committed to your goals, even during challenging times.
Alignment with Values: It ensures that your actions are aligned with your personal values and principles, leading to a more authentic and fulfilling life.
Get started
Reflect on Your Core Values
Identify the values that are most important to you. Consider what principles guide your actions and decisions. Examples include integrity, compassion, creativity, and growth.
Assess Your Strengths and Passions:
Think about your strengths and passions. What are you naturally good at? What activities make you feel most alive and fulfilled?
Consider Your Purpose:
Ask yourself what you want to achieve in your life. What kind of impact do you want to have on the world around you? Imagine you’re looking back from your deathbed - what will you be proud to have been and accomplished?
Draft Your Statement:
Combine your core values, strengths, passions, and purpose into a cohesive statement. Start with a simple structure, such as:
"My mission is to [what you want to achieve], by [how you will achieve it], to [the impact you want to make]."
Refine and Polish:
Review your draft and refine it. Make sure it is clear, concise, and truly reflective of who you are and what you want to accomplish.
Live Your Mission:
Use your mission statement as a guide in your daily life. Revisit it regularly and adjust it as needed to ensure it remains aligned with your evolving goals and values.
Example Personal Mission Statements

"My mission is to inspire and empower others to achieve their full potential through compassionate leadership and innovative thinking."
-
"I strive to lead a life of integrity and creativity, helping others find their own path to happiness and success."
-
"My mission is to cultivate a life of continuous growth and learning, contributing positively to my community and the world."
